Section 8 Program

Section 8 Program

In the Housing Choice Voucher/Section 8 Program, you find your own rental housing and use the vouchers to help pay the rent. The PHA pays a part of the rent directly to the landlord. the family then pays the difference between the actual rent charged by the landlord and the amount from the PHA voucher. You can pick any house or apartment that meets minimum health and safety standards set by the PHA.

Eligibility is based on annual income and family size. For example, a family of five in the Tri-County area must make less than $47,500 a year to take part in the Housing Choice Voucher/Section 8 Program. When a family selects a housing unit that passes PHA inspection, the family and the landlord sign a lease and, at the same time, the landlord and the PHA sign a contract that runs for the same term as the lease.

There are many people on the list for the Housing Choice Voucher/Section 8 Program.

The Section 8 waiting list is now closed. Nearly 3000 Section 8 applications were distributed April 23-25, 2003.
