Public housing provides decent and safe rental housing for families, the elderly and persons with disabilities. The Peoria Housing Authority uses income limits set by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to determine if you can live in public housing. For example, a family of four in the Tri-County area must earn less than $44,000 a year to live in public housing.
If you want to apply, come to the PHA office at 100 S. Richard Pryor Place (formerly Sheridan Road) - off MacArthur Highway, to fill out an application. If you qualify, the PHA will check references to make sure you and your family will be good tenants. You will need to bring:
1. Names and addresses of your current landlord
2. Proof of income (recent check stub)
3. Names and addresses of employers and banks
4. Birth certificates and tax returns
5. Social Security cards
If you are eligible, the PHA will put your name on a waiting list, unless there is an apartment ready and no one is waiting.
Rent is figured on your family's expected gross annual income. Generally, it is 30% of your monthly-adjusted income. That means we take out expenses like medical bills and child care costs before we figure your rent.
