Success Story: Marlon Green

When you think of affordable housing, what do you picture? Do you see a hard-working man, trying to finish school in order to support his children? If you didn’t before, you soon will. Meet Marlon Green:

Marlon Green has been a PHA client under the Housing Choice Voucher Program—better known as ‘Section 8’—for six years. Green turned to the PHA after he was awarded full custody of his children and wanted to be able to provide for them while also pursuing a degree in Business Administration.

Needing guidance, Green applied for the Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program at the PHA, knowing they could help link him to resources he would need in order to be successful and gain long-term self-sufficiency. Green and his coordinator determined his ultimate goal: to have a degree in Business Administration. They outlined each of the steps it would take to achieve this goal, then got to work pursuing it.

The PHA is proud to have a model client like Marlon Green.

Participating in Section 8 and FSS opened many doors for Marlon and his family. Section 8 gave him the choice to live affordably—thus saving money for his education and his family’s future—as well as the ability to send his children to a high-performing school. Participating in FSS gave him a mentor, and access to incredible opportunities. One such opportunity was the Ernest J. Bohn Scholarship, which he was awarded in 2013. The scholarship—provided by the North Central Regional Council of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO)—is given to one applicant in the entire eight-state region. What’s more, housing authorities are only allowed to submit one applicant per award cycle. The PHA is proud to have a model client like Marlon Green win such a prestigious award. This scholarship allowed Green to continue his education at Midstate College, from where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in late 2014.

Here is Marlon on WMBD in October advocating for the need for more Section 8 landlords.

Marlon is just one of many success stories from PHA clients. Be on the lookout for more!
